Wilhelma Stuttgart: Historical brick wall rehabilitated

Up to this day, Wilhelma in Stuttgart is Germany's only combined zoological and botanical garden. Already since 1851, its covered walk connects the historical buildings in the Moorish Garden of the park. Because the weather caused the masonry trouble, the covered walk was rehabilitated with special building materials of epasit in 2011.

Along the covered walk, visitors can walk dry shod in all weathers round the border of the garden located in the heart of the park area of 30 hectares. It lies between the Moorish Villa and today's Aquarium. With its columns, decorated ceilings and ornaments, the walk in the middle of the Moorish Garden is a decoration itself, which has, however, been affected by the weather and the ravages of time. With regard to its rehabilitation, the responsible heritage agency considered, first of all, the proposal made by epasit and approved the building project. The building expert Daniel Schlichenmaier monitored and documented the proper waterpoofing of the historical brick masonry.

Preparing measures

The area in contact with the ground of the approximately 40 m long brick wall has been stripped up to the foundation so that, in a first step, the undermined cementous waterpoofing as well as loose parts, separation layers and dust could be completely removed. The fabricators of the company BAL Bautenschutz & Malerfachbetrieb, Stuttgart, scratched loose joints free up to a depth of approx. 2 cm. Subsequently, they carefully cleaned the whole brick masonry in order to create a stable and clean underground.

The covered walk is sealed

As a preparation for the plaster impermeable to presswater, the WTA certified bonding coarse plaster MineralSanoPro hb has been roughcast in a fully covering way up to a height of approx. 30 cm above the upper edge of the ground. Subsequently, the surface was plastered with the matching sealing and waterproof plaster in a film thickness of 15 mm. After drying-out, the surface was coated in two working cycles with the flexible, two-component sealing slurry MineralDicht flex. In conclusion, a wear-resisting layer against damages has been applied as well as a drainage laid, before the cavity along the wall was filled up correctly.

Beauty corrections intended

The proposal of rehabilitation comprises moreover the repair of the masonry in the visible area. Later, chip-offs shall be filled up with sandstone mortar, joints which came out shall be replenished with rehabilitation grout of a matching colour and the whole wall shall be treated with a special waterproofing agent.

From pleasure place to the most popular
destination of Stuttgart

Every year Wilhelma in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt attracts more than two million small and big visitors. In the middle of the 19th century, King Wilhelm I of Württemberg originally built the park as a summer residence in the Moorish style. Gradually, it has been completed by an orangery, further buildings and a spacious park. Today, Wilhelma is owned by Baden-Württemberg. During the Second World War, the park was seriously damaged. Later, its then director had the idea to make it more attractive by adding animals to it. At the beginning of the 60ies its expansion as a combined zoological and botanical garden was approved by the Landtag. Numerous conversions and annexes followed. Today, about 9,000 animals of more than 1,000 species and more than 6,000 species of plants live in Wilhelma.
